I was genuinely scared of the showing on Friday night.. and still am. It's not just fear though, it's a mixture of excitement, anticipation and fear, all at the same time... there have only been a few moments in my life I've felt this way, and I relish the moments. It's almost a heightened excitement which has a pinch of fear :) I don't know how else to describe it.

It's truly hard to believe that tomorrow night is the culmination in many way of over a year of work. From sending the original rough story concept to Brad last July, to the first draft of the script being finished in January, to shooting in March, and finally this... wow.

God has truly blessed the production of this film, and I hope the He is glorified tomorrow night, above all else.

Giving Thanks...

This year has been intense. A lot has happened in a short period of time. It's been both good and tragic, in many ways. Many of you close to me know more of the details. As we come to a holiday called Thanksgiving, I pause to reflect on the things I have to be thankful for.

Though this year has had a lot of "bad" things happen, I know that it has all happened for my good, and God's glory. I have a wonderful family, who I love so much, and who loves me. I have awesome friends who're always there. And I've made some awesome new friends this year. I have an amazing job! That I absolutely love! I worked on my first ever FEATURE film this year! And I had my first film come out on DVD! How awesome is that? And above all things, I have a wonderful Savior who is always there. And I mean always.

This year has been hard, but it's for my good. Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

Chasing the Sun....

Several weeks ago, I was invited to attend the 3rd annual High Desert Shorts International Film Festival in Pahrump, Nevada. My short film, WELCOME TO THE PARTY, had competed and won in the SCI-FI/HORROR category. My good friend, and actor in the short, Daniel Noa, joined me on the trip to the festival. The festival coordinator, Tony Mendoza, and founder, Linda Kass were totally welcoming to us, and they even showed the trailer for NO GREATER LOVE during the awards show. This was the first time I had ever won first place in any festival for any film I had worked on, it was quite a thrill. We had a wonderful time at the festival, and I hope it continues to grow from year to year...

Daniel and I spent a bit of the next day in Las Vegas, stopping by on the way back to Southern California. Las Vegas is really a spectacular place... and full of awesome photo ops. I was also happy to find the restaurant inside the Venitian that I hadn't been to for three or four years, but fondly remembered... it was just as good :)

We finally left Vegas on Sunday afternoon, around 3pm, and "chased the sun" all the way to California...

NO GREATER LOVE - Update

Just thought I would post an update on the OTHER Christian film :) The one I happen to be heavily involved with! NO GREATER LOVE.

We're finished with post audio and color correction right now, and we're awaiting the score. Since it hasn't been officially announced who is scoring the film, I can't say yet... but I am VERY excited about the score! It's going to be fantastic! :) We're in a holding pattern now with the film, and as you know FIREPROOF was released yesterday throughout the country, and that film's success has a big part of what will happen with NGL at some point.... we're just praying God's will be done.

I will try to continue updating my blog here with new information as I'm able...

To view the NGL trailer and more information check out the OFFICIAL SITE

FIREPROOF WORLD PREMIERE!

I was privileged to be able to attend the WORLD PREMIERE of the new film from Sherwood Pictures (the company who brought us FACING THE GIANTS) FIREPROOF at the Arclight Theater in Hollywood! The night was fantastic. They screened the film to a nice size group and had a great live radio broadcast afterward. The evening was topped off by an after party at the nearby Firefighter Museum. I was able to meet Erin Bethea and Kirk Cameron, the film's two leads, as well as Alex Kendrick, the co-writer and director. It was great to meet Alex, as he's been someone I've looked up to for some time, and he's as real in person as he is on screen. He's one of the most genuine, nicest guys you will ever meet. All in all had a wonderful time, and it was pretty neat that most everyone knew about NO GREATER LOVE as well! :)

Pray that FIREPROOF has a great opening weekend... and if you can check it out this weekend... it's sure to encourage and inspire you!

A couple pictures from the premiere below.

Alex Kendrick (writer/director of Facing the Giants and Fireproof) and myself.

Brad Silverman (writer/director of No Greater Love) and myself.

AOF Festival - Day 4, Monday July 28

Headed down to AOF and saw a couple films. One in particular blew me away, and another one pleasantly surprised me.

Swing Vote - Short

This was a political short about two Democratic women who seduced Republican men and convinced them to change their party. It was interesting because the filmmakers were obviously Democrats, but the short actually presented these two in a negative light, as manipulative scheming women. There was a fair amount of Bush bashing at the Q&A afterward as well. All in all the film gave me a bad taste in my mouth.

My Last Night - Short

This was a very disturbing dark short. It tracks the last night of a security guard, he is heading to vacation in Hawaii... some guys come to rob the place and he goes to stop them, and he gets shot, then we see him in Hawaii, with a gunshot wound on his arm, and we all breath a sigh of relief, but then we see his ticket on the ground of the building he worked at, and blood covers the ticket. Very chilling film, I thought it was well done.

Treasure Blind - Feature

When I went to see this I had no idea it was a faith-based film until I heard Brian Shoop (director) and his wife talking about San Antonio (SAICFF) before the movie started (they were sitting a couple rows back in the theater. I'll be honest, I was a bit saddened as I thought, oh no a Christian movie... lol. But, I still had hope as it had been nominated for several awards, including BEST DRAMA and BEST ACTOR (Brian) so I sat back to enjoy the film. The film is about Cliff Edwards, an aging taxi driver who is also a treasure seeker. His grandson, Henry, (who is blind) is dropped off at his house one day, and they start learning how to deal with one another. Soon his son comes into the picture and we find out he has a ton of debt to pay off from gambling... well, I won't give away anymore. I really enjoyed the film, and enjoyed meeting Brian and his wife afterward as well. I certainly hope they get some distribution as well. I would recommend it to people. It is definitley an indie film, and has some technical shortcomings, but it's a good story, and has some great performances, specifically from Brian (who plays Cliff) and Daniel Brookshire who plays Henry.

The Flyboys - Feature

This is THE BEST film I have EVER seen at AOF. I was absolutely blown away by the film. I am surprised it hasn't gotten a domestic theatrical distributor yet. It had incredible performances by both Stephen Baldwin, and Tom Sizemore, and the rest of the cast was fantastic as well. The story is about two friends, Jason and Kyle, who are normal junior high kids. They accidently stow away aboard a plane owned by the mob, and craziness ensues. The cinematography in the film was incredible, specifically the shots of the plane, some great stuff. I will be surprised if this film doesn't win best picture of the festival.

After The Flyboys, IRH screened and we had about 15 people in the audience, everyone laughed at the right spots, and seemed to enjoy it overall. The show looked fantastic on the big screen, and the music ROCKED! I love hearing it through the theater speakers.

The next film I have showing will be Welcome to the Party on Wednesday night, hopefully we'll get a bigger crowd for that.

AOF Festival - Day 3, Sunday July 27

Today was the second day I was able to go down to the AOF festival. I had to miss yesterday because of work that came up. Today my brother Adam went down with me for the afternoon, and we saw a few films.

P.J. - Feature

We missed the beginning of this film, but the basic story is about a man who has multiple personalities, and him dealing with those, and it actually dove into some interesting things in the subtext. I don't think I would ever watch this film again, but it made me think about a lot of stuff, so that was good.

Check Brights - Short

An experimental short, at least I think, it had some weird techno music going on in the background, the whole thing was shot in super close ups, and it was really short. It was basically about a guy who gets mad for someone not turning their bright lights off when they pass him on the road, and he kills them for it. Didn't care for this one too much.

The Rat Thing - Feature

One of the best features I've ever seen at AOF. This was a hilarious comedy about two buddies who hatch a plot to pretend a rat bit one of them at a local supermarket. As you can imagine, some crazy stuff happens! The performances and chemistry of the two leads was terrific, and the rat was, dare I say, adorable! Great film!

Red Canvas - Feature

Was really looking forward to Red Canvas. I knew it would look good, and it had some name actors in it as well. The look of the film was great, but the story and acting kind of fell flat for me. The story is basically about a guy who gets in prison, he gets out only because one of the prison guards trains MMA fighters to compete in this Red Canvas thing. Anyway, his dad ends up getting hurt and needs money to pay bills for his business, etc. so the son fights in the Red Canvas Tournament. I felt the bond between the son and father could have been much better, and it would have made me care more for the characters, but it wasn't there. Still didn't feel like I had wasted two hours, I enjoyed the fighting sequences, they were very unique in their shooting style.

AOF Fest - Day 1 (Friday, July 25, 2008)

Today was the first day of the 4th Action on Film Festival. I have attended and had films showing each year of it's existence. This year I have two films showing, Welcome to the Party (which was 3rd place in the 2007 DVXuser All-Hallows fest), and IRH: The Flight of Apollo 11 (which was written and directed by Brad J. Silverman, the guy behind the latest feature I've been working on, No Greater Love).

I've decided to chronicle my festival experience through the blog, since this blog needs content!

So, I'll review the films I saw today, but first let me say I really do enjoy going to AOF each year. The staff there is terrific. Josh is the festival coordinator again this year, and I got a chance to say hello in passing to him, he always does a great job. Also got to say hi to Del Weston today, he started the whole thing. They have moved their location to Pasadena this year, which is a welcome shift. I think it's a much better location than years past. Now onto the reviews.

Running Dragon - Short

I missed the first few minutes of this film, but caught most of it. It was a unique look at a man who was adopted as a child from Vietnam and completely forgot about his old culture. He was so young at the time he was adopted that he just assumed the identity of an American. Interesting film.

The Arab - Short

Didn't quite care for this short film. It basically was set in a house where many people from all of Europe (France, England, Ireland, etc) hid from the "arabs". It was weird, and I sensed a hidden agenda message, but never quite got what it was.

My Wife is a Zombie - Short

Interesting short, especially considering it was "inspired by true events" which makes it even creepier. Basically a man kills his wife and kid thinking they're zombies... yeah.

Broken Fences - Feature

First feature I saw today. First let me say the lead female was excellent, her acting is to be commended. The film itself didn't work too well for me. The story was extremely depressing, and I never really felt connected to the characters, I didn't know what their history was with one another or whatnot. The basic premise is about this man, who's son is getting out of jail (he was put away for armed robbery, which apparently he wasn't really involved in) the son says he's changed, so the dad allows him back, only to have bad event after bad event happen, which eventually leads to several murders (at the hands of the son) and then the dad kills the son... really depressing to say the least...

Face of Justice - Short

Went and saw this short film because a few guys I know worked on it. Jerry Turner directed the film, he also worked on getting some second unit shots for Smuggler's Ransom. Also, Herman Witkam did the score, he did some of the score on IRH. Anyway, I had seen the film online before, but it was cool to see it on the big screen. Some of the acting was unbalanced in spots, but the gunfight at the end was cool. Get some squibs on the actors next time though. ;)

Ghost Town - Feature

The second feature I saw during the day. This film was a western about a man who's dad had been killed by another man, and he enacted revenge on that family, and disappered. The film happens many years later, now the man has a daughter, in her 20's, as does the son of the other man who was killed. They meet eventually and fall for each other, not knowing their past... this movie ends quite depressing as well, I also felt it wasn't given a high enough budget, as I think period is quite tough to pull off low budget, I think the film suffered technically because of that.

Appartion - Short

This short was of particular interest to me, as it is nominated for Best Horror Short Film (as is Welcome to the Party). After seeing this short (which felt REALLY short, at only 7 min. length) I was pleased to feel my film is still in the running for the award. The film really never went anywhere. It was about a guy who got killed when these three friends were on a camping trip, and he keeps appearing to this girl... and that's it. Yeah, it didn't really go anywhere.

GPS - Feature

This film had SO much potential... I really wanted to enjoy it 100%, but the payoff just wasn't there for me. Basically it's about these two guys who are "GPS Hunters" they go on these GPS hunts for fun, it's like a club or something, they follow coordinates, and get new coordinates, etc. Interesting concept. Anyway, they get a GPS hunt invite from this dude who stole a bunch of money, so they think maybe at the end the money will be there, so they decide to do it, and kind of rope a group of their friends to tag along. Well, someone starts attacking them during the trip, and one by one the friends die. We find out later it's one of the guy's jealous sister, who was always mad she wasn't treated right, and wants the money from their parents will to go to her... that's the payoff... it didn't work for me at all... I was on board right until the end, really was. The score for the film was great, by a guy I've worked with a few times before, Justin R. Durban.

Overall a fun day at AOF today. Looking forward to seeing more films this week.

NO GREATER LOVE!

Hey everyone!

I wanted to make you aware of a great faith-based romantic drama I'm working on, NO GREATER LOVE. I haven't updated the blog in a LONG time! Well... so much to talk about...

I've been working on a feature film called NO GREATER LOVE. I actually thought of the initial story idea way back in July of last year... then in November we, at Coram Deo Studios, were trying to come up with a great faith-based story to tell, and it came up! Brad Silverman wrote the screenplay, and is also directing the film. It is his first feature, and it has been awesome seeing him work, he's doing a wonderful job! I am an Associate Producer, AC (Assistant Cameraman), and Editor. All things I love to do! We're working with a great cast, which includes Anthony Tyler Quinn, who I've had the privilege working on SMUGGLER'S RANSOM with, which leads me into my next bit of news! We have an official release date for SMUGGLER'S RANSOM. It will premiere in church's all across the country on June 6th, and be on sale in stores June 10th! You can already pre-order copies from several online vendors, including Amazon.com! I'll list that link below. So, the last few months have been great. It's been awhile since I've posted on here!

I just wanted to post a short film I wrote and directed back in September. We shot this in one night, from around 8pm to 5am. Fun times! I worked with an amazingly talented cast and crew. Geoff Reisner was my Director of Photography, and did some amazing work. I really hope to work with him again in the future on something even bigger hopefully!

The film was shot for an online Halloween film festival. It got 3rd place out of 40 films. So I was pretty excited.

So... without further adieu here is the short!

Welcome to the Party

San Antonio Independent Christian Film Festival

Hey everyone! Wanted to update you on the film festival this past weekend. Smuggler's Ransom played twice during the two days of the festival, and both screenings were jam packed with people! During the two screenings we had around 800 people total see Smuggler's! And the reaction during, and after the film was amazing! :)

We didn't win any awards, which really surprised us as we felt our production overall, and the acting in the film really stood out. The films that did win had a political or semi-political slant to them, so I kind of think it was a little agenda push for the festival, but who knows... Regardless we had a great festival.

Daniel was out there, and here are a few pictures! We went to church (had my morning Starbucks) and then went to lunch after church. We spotted a big fire that had started in Castaic, which is very southwest from us. As we drove home we spotted another fire on the hillside, and it seemed pretty close. I was a little skeptical, so I climbed the hill behind our house, with my camera, and the fire was very far away. I came back down the hill and announced to the family that the fire was far away. An hour passed. My Aunt, Uncle, and cousins came over as planned (they had come to have a BBQ and watch football) They decided to take a hike up the hill to check out the fire. I stayed behind, didn't want to spend the time to go up again. When they got back they announced the fire was very close. I was still skeptical, but went outside anyway, and took my camera. A helicopter flew overhead, and I grabbed some shots, then I went inside. The electricity went out, and the tension grew. My mom yelled for me to go out to take more pictures as I heard the loud sound of a chopper overhead. I ran outside to see a huge chopper right near the side of the house. I looked up the hill and saw flames creeping downward. I went inside and said, "Yeah, we might have to leave." I went to my room to pack my hard drives and computer away. Moments later my dad comes in and says to my mom "Grab some clothes we're leaving." I grabbed a few clothes and threw them into a suitcase. My dad came over and told me "Get mom's computer, the fire is almost down the hill, don't say anything" I ran to grab the computer and tossed it in the back of my car, along with my hard drives, computer, and some clothing. Then I helped get a few more things in the other cars, and got my dog Rosie into my car as well. We then took off as the flames came to within 20 feet of the house. My dad stayed by the house, and we took the dogs somewhere to stay overnight, and we went to my Aunt and Uncle's house 20 miles north to stay for a bit. We got word we could come back to the house that night, so we did, and spent a sleepless night ready to leave at any minute as hot spots continued to flair up. Now things here are VERY safe, but the rest of Southern California is in grave danger.

Denver Trip

Well hello everyone. It was really an amazing time of encouragement. A concert like that is almost just like one big long worship service... I sang out with the songs I knew (which were most of them) and sometimes listened in quiet thought at the lyrics, that speak volumes of truth. I really appreciate the lyrics in their music. They are to the point, and very true, not like a lot of "Christian bands" today who's lyrics could just have the "He" replaced with a "She" and it turn into a pop love song. Anyway, enough with my rant... I was just incredibly blessed, challenged and encouraged tonight!

Stuff, Stuff and more Stuff!

Ok, lots of cool cool things to share today! :)

First, I found out on Friday that Smuggler's Ransom is a semi-finalist at the San Antonio Independent Christian Film Festival! http://www.independentchristianfilms.com/ That means we're in the running for the Best of Festival Jubilee Award! I am really excited, and I'll be going out to San Antonio for the festival! (October 19-21).

Second, I wanted to tell you all about a band a few of my friends started. It's called The Ivy Street Band. They have a really cool sound (I think) and I'm trying to help get the word out about their band... so check them out on their website http://www.ivystreetband.com Be sure to listen for some rocking mandolin and banjo ;)

And finally! I am working hard on a new faith-based feature film script titled: Turning Point. I started this week, and I'm about 1/4 done with the first draft. It's really turning out nice, and I'm excited to finish my first full length script! I could use prayer though, it gets quite annoying and challenging, especially considering I don't consider myself much of a writer, even though I really enjoy it.

Anyway, there's my new news! Hope everyone who reads this is doing great!

A call to Christians

I was really convicted by something I heard in a lesson at bible study tonight. For those of you who read this that are born-again Christians, and true followers of our Lord Jesus Christ, I want to share something... something very important...

Think about this. Take any of us... and if we're married, engaged, or have a boyfriend/girlfriend relationship, aren't we all pretty excited to share about that relationship? I mean, especially if someone asks about it! Well, we as believers should have the closest relationship with Jesus Christ, and we should be excited about it, and not ashamed! So often when asked something about our faith, or our life, we shy away from bringing up the gospel and Christ.... we ought not to shy away from that, but we should be fired up to share! This is an exhortation to me is as much to me as to any of you other brothers and sisters... let's pray that we would NOT be ashamed of Christ or the gospel, and we would be fired up! Until next time...

It's been forever...

I haven't posted in a long long while, and there's oh so much to catch everyone up on... but for now, check out the new blog I just got up and running, for the SCV Crossroads Bible Study here.

Hope everyone is doing well, and I promise a more detailed post with new stuff is on it's way soon!

Cool New Website!

Hey everyone, Signature Productions (my production company) now has a brand new website, and it looks fantastic. I was at the 2007 Action-on-Film festival last weekend, and it was once again a lot of fun! This year I was involved with three of the films screening there. "Smuggler's Ransom", "SP Live", and "Captain Fundraiser". SP Live screened on Friday night, so Brad Silverman (director) and his wife came down for that. We also shot some footage of the screening to use in the movie (hard to explain). My brother Adam, and sister-in-law Jaimie also came down on friday night for the festival.

Then on Saturday, Smuggler's Ransom screened in the morning, so I was there for that, and I also stayed for the awards show since Smuggler's was nominated for BEST PRODUCED SCREENPLAY, and BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS (MELLISA POLLARD). Sadly, we didn't pick the awards up, but the nominations were cool! So that was my AOF experience... I also saw a lot of great shorts, and met some cool people!

Wow...

Life has a very funny way of playing tricks on you... but what matters is how we respond to it... Now the real work begins. I call myself a filmmaker, but unless I'm making films I am not one. So, as some of you may or may not know, my film partner Daniel and I have many many projects in the works. At the moment, our latest project, "Smuggler's Ransom" is being shopped around to several distribution companies, and at the time of this writing, we are in negotiation with several companies. Hopefully by the end of the summer, you will be able to find "Smuggler's Ransom" on bookstore and DVD store shelves. I feel like this post has been kind of boring for most of you, but this is me talking... I guess this is what a blog is for, eh? Until next time...

Link to the "Smuggler's Ransom" website where you can now view the first 5 minutes of the film: www.SmugglersRansom.com

Virginia Trip - Day 5

Well... today was a LONG day... went to church in the morning, and then headed out to DC with the Noa's. Daniel's graduation! The ceremony was great, and we had a great special speaker, Ken Wales, who has produced many TV shows and films, including the new film, "Amazing Grace" I had the opportunity to meet Ken after the ceremony as well, and we chatted briefly. He's a really neat guy. Anyway, it was awesome seeing Daniel graduate as well as many of my other friends (Paul, Jeremiah, Briane, etc. etc.) I was very happy to be there! Then after everything we all went to the Matoviche's house for pizza, which was great. We may go sight-seeing tomorrow or something, we will see... until next time....

Virginia Trip - Day 3

Well... onto day 3... Daniel picked me up around 11AM. We ran some errands ad ate lunch. Then we went back to the dorm on campus and did a little more packing. Then at 4, he had to take part in a rehearsal for the graduation ceremony happening tomorrow. Then after that, there was a little BBQ. And, Daniel's relatives and family showed up. It was great meeting all of them, and I really enjoyed their company immensely! Daniel; has a great family :) So, tomorrow is the big day, the graduation... I think this may be the only graduation I ever attend, other than my own children's someday. I am very excited for Daniel, and I know that he has great new things ahead of him! Until tomorrow....

Virginia Trip - Day 2

Well, the day started when Daniel came to pick me up at the hotel at around 9:30AM. I was still a bit tired, so we drove over to Dunkin' Donuts and got some coffee! Then we headed off to PHC. I have been out to visit Daniel at PHC two other times, so it feels very familiar. We headed to his dorm room, and finished up a lot of his pacin... a lot of throwing away stuff too. Then we had lunch, and then went back to packing, and worked a little on a screenplay, which at this point shall remain nameless :) Then we headed out to the Ryan's house to a little get together with a bunch of people from PHC. I knew a lot of people there, and it was a lot of fun just hanging out. We even had a nice bonfire, and had SMORES, and sang some worship songs around the fire. I also got to see an AWESOME Virginia sunset :) And as I promised, lots and lots of pictures today! Enjoy!

Virginia Trip - Day 1

Well, I came out to Virginia to see my good friend Daniel graduate college! Anyway, my flight was originally scheduled for 12:45PM departure, but due to weather, it was delayed until 2:45!!! But, I had lunch and stuff. Then we were in the air. The flight was great! Four and a half hours, which is really short to get to Virginia. The movie playing on the flight was really cute. It was called, "Catch and Release" and it starred Jennifer Garner. I also got blessed by switching seats with a lady who wanted her mom to sit next to her, and the new seat was an upgraded one, so I had more legroom! Then I finally landed in Dulles, and Daniel picked me up, along with Jacob and Bradley, two of Daniel's friends at college. Overall a great, but long day...

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://dvxbriceman.blogspot.com/2007/05/virginia-trip-day-1.html' title='Virginia Trip - Part 2

So, today was the setup day at convention, and it was and will be by far the toughest day physically as well as mentally. We started the day by waking up at 4:45AM, before the sun had risen. We went to the convention center at 6:30AM and began setting up...

Finally the booth was complete by 5:00PM, almost 12 hours later...

Then I finally headed out to the hotel, and got lost for over an hour trying to find a way back to the hotel.

Then we went to eat finally...
